Everything about The Academy Of Medical Sciences totally explained

The Academy of Medical Sciences is the United Kingdom's national academy of medical sciences. It was established in 1998 on the recommendation of a group that was chaired by Sir Michael Atiyah OM FRS PRSE Hon FREng Hon FMedSci. Its President is Professor Sir John Bell PMedSci. The Academy promotes advances in medical science and campaigns to ensure these are converted into healthcare benefits for society. We pursue an interdisciplinary approach to the development of policy advice, share expertise and experience, form strategic partnerships to achieve specific goals, and urge stakeholders to action.
We champion the UK’s strengths in medical science, including the unique opportunities for research afforded by the NHS, encourage the implementation of new ideas and solutions – often through novel partnerships – and help to remove barriers to progress.
We campaign for the development, protection and promotion of careers for academics in the biomedical sciences and encourage good practice in training and development.
As at 2007, it has a membership of 881 Fellows who are all UK leading medical, veterinary, laboratory, nursing, dental, or paramedical academics or clinicians.
Our Fellows are the UK’s leading medical scientists from hospitals and general practice, academia, industry and the public service. The excellence of their science, their contribution to medicine and society and the diversity of their achievements are reflected throughout our work.
Fellows are drawn from clinical academic medicine, biomedical research, veterinary science, dentistry, medical and nursing care and other allied health professions.
40 new Fellows are elected to the Academy each year.
Past presidents of the Academy of Medical Sciences are Sir Keith Peters FRS FMedSci (2002-2006) and Sir Peter Lachmann FRS FMedSci (1998-2002).
